Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No. This is a self-referral service so you do not have to be referred by your doctor, although your doctor may well suggest attending to have your ears cleared.

Is it safe?

Yes! When performed by a trained practitioner, microsuctioning is the safest way to have your ears cleared out. That is because it is being done under direct visualisation unlike syringing, so the practitioner can view all of the structures in the ear as they are carrying out the procedure. Also, it also does not require forcing water into the ear, which is often the cause of problems during or after syringing.

Can I have microsuctioning done if I have a perforated eardrum?

Yes. Because it simply involves extracting the wax, debris or foreign object by suctioning rather than forcing water into the ear canal, it is perectly safe to do microsuctioning even if there is a perforation of the eardrum present.

Do I need to use drops before my microsuctioning treatment?

No. We are able to clear wax whether it is soft or hard. In fact, sometimes it is easier when it is firm. On occasion, the mircosuctioning practitioner may ask you to use drops prior to your next appointment if the wax is too impacted but they will advise you about that at the time and explain which drops to use.

What if it turns out I have no wax?

Hey, no problem - no wax, no fee! If it turns out that there is no wax or debris for the practitioner to clear out, then we won't charge you. Instead, the practitioner will let you know and advise on the best way to have the blocked sensation investigated further.
